wedding budget priorities<\/strong>, because figuring out what you should spend is a lot easier. It is easier once you figure out what actually matters to you.<\/p>\nOne of the first questions I hear from newly engaged couples is, \u201cWhat\u2019s a realistic wedding budget?\u201d<\/p>\n
I wish I had an easy answer, but the truth is, there isn\u2019t one.<\/p>\n
Every wedding is different because every couple is different. Some dream of a small ceremony with their closest family and friends. Meanwhile, others have always imagined celebrating with everyone they know. Some care most about incredible food, while others would rather invest in photography, entertainment, or flowers.<\/p>\n
None of those choices are wrong. They simply reflect what\u2019s most important to each couple.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why I don\u2019t think wedding budgets are really about the number.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re about priorities.<\/p>\n
Your Wedding Doesn\u2019t Need Every Wedding Tradition<\/h2>\n
One mistake I see couples make is feeling like they have to include every tradition. This is because \u201cthat\u2019s just what you do at a wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n
The truth is, there are very few things you actually have<\/em> to do.<\/p>\nThis is your wedding day, not anyone else\u2019s. If a tradition feels meaningful to you, embrace it. If it doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s okay to let it go. The weddings that stand out to me aren\u2019t the ones that followed every rule. They\u2019re the ones that genuinely reflected the couple\u2019s personalities.<\/p>\n
I think one of the biggest challenges couples face today is trying to figure out which details actually matter. This is hard because some only feel<\/em> important since they\u2019ve seen them on social media.<\/p>\nBetween Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok, it\u2019s easy to convince yourself that your wedding needs every trend and every upgrade. You may also think you need every little detail for it to be considered beautiful.<\/p>\n
Before long, you\u2019re wondering if you need a champagne wall, custom cocktail napkins, personalized favors, or a live painter. You may even wonder about late-night snacks and an elaborate seating chart because everyone else seems to have them.<\/p>\n
The reality is, you probably don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Ask Yourself What You Want People to Remember<\/h3>\n
Instead of asking, \u201cWhat should we spend?\u201d I encourage couples to ask themselves a different question:<\/p>\n
What do we want people to remember?<\/strong><\/p>\nThat question changes everything.<\/p>\n
One thing I\u2019ve learned from standing in the back of ceremonies and watching reception after reception is this. Guests don\u2019t remember weddings the way couples think they do.<\/p>\n
Six months later, they probably couldn\u2019t tell you what flowers were on the tables or what style charger plates you rented. However, they\u2019ll remember how they felt<\/strong>.<\/p>\nThey\u2019ll remember dancing until their feet hurt and catching up with family they hadn\u2019t seen in years. Moreover, they\u2019ll remember celebrating one of the happiest days of your life.<\/p>\n
Of course, they might remember the Diet Coke station. That\u2019s because it was such a fun reflection of the bride\u2019s favorite drink.<\/p>\n
But most of all, they\u2019ll remember how happy the two of you looked.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the experience people take home with them.<\/p>\n
Your Guest Count Has a Bigger Impact Than You Think<\/h2>\n
Once you\u2019ve identified your wedding budget priorities, the next step is understanding which decisions have the biggest impact on your budget.<\/p>\n
One thing that surprises many couples is how much their guest count influences the rest of their budget.<\/strong><\/p>\nMost people naturally think about catering because that\u2019s the most obvious expense, but it\u2019s so much more than that. Every additional guest affects your tables, chairs, linens, and centerpieces. Additionally, invitations, favors, alcohol, cake, staffing, rentals, and sometimes even the size of your venue are affected.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s one decision that creates a ripple effect through almost every other category.<\/p>\n
That doesn\u2019t mean you should invite fewer people. If celebrating with a large group of family and friends is one of your biggest priorities, then that\u2019s exactly where your budget should go.<\/p>\n
It simply means understanding that every decision has a domino effect, and that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n
You Don\u2019t Need a \u201cWow\u201d Moment Everywhere<\/h2>\n
I\u2019ve also noticed that couples sometimes feel like they need to create a \u201cwow\u201d moment around every corner.<\/p>\n
Personally, I\u2019d rather see one incredible focal point than ten average ones.<\/p>\n
Maybe it\u2019s a stunning floral installation above the dance floor. Maybe it\u2019s an unforgettable band. Maybe it\u2019s dramatic pipe and drape that completely transforms the room.<\/p>\n
Choose something that\u2019s meaningful to you and let it shine.<\/p>\n
When every detail is trying to be the star, nothing really stands out.<\/p>\n
Where You Can Simplify Without Sacrificing the Experience<\/h3>\n
One of my favorite conversations to have with couples is about where they can simplify without sacrificing the overall experience.<\/p>\n
Saving money doesn\u2019t always mean settling for less. Most of the time, it simply means being intentional.<\/p>\n
For example, instead of placing large floral centerpieces on every table, consider alternating them with candle-only tables. This approach creates beautiful variety throughout the room. Meanwhile, it allows you to focus your floral budget where guests naturally pay the most attention.<\/p>\n
The same idea applies to ceremony flowers. In many cases, those arrangements can be moved to the reception instead of ordering two completely separate sets of florals. I\u2019ve seen this done countless times, and guests never know the difference.<\/p>\n
And if you\u2019ve chosen a venue because it\u2019s naturally beautiful, let it do some of the work.<\/p>\n
We have venues throughout Alexandria, Pineville, and Central Louisiana with beautiful architecture and mature oak trees. There are also gorgeous windows and scenic outdoor spaces. Those features don\u2019t necessarily need to compete with elaborate d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n
Sometimes less really is more.<\/p>\n
Where I Think It\u2019s Worth Investing Your Wedding Budget<\/h2>\n
When it comes to vendors, there are a few areas where I personally think it\u2019s worth investing.<\/p>\n
Photography<\/h3>\n
If I were planning my own wedding today with a fixed budget, photography is one place I wouldn\u2019t cut corners.<\/p>\n
At the end of the day, it\u2019s one of the few tangible things you\u2019ll have long after the flowers have wilted and the cake has been eaten. Years from now, those photographs become part of your family\u2019s story. They\u2019re what you\u2019ll look back on during anniversaries, share with your children someday, and treasure. This lasts long after the details have faded from memory.<\/p>\n
And don\u2019t forget that your photographer is with you for most of your wedding day. You\u2019re spending hours together. Therefore, finding someone whose personality makes you feel comfortable is just as important as loving their editing style.<\/p>\n
Wedding Video and Content Creation<\/h3>\n
Another investment I think is often overlooked is video.<\/p>\n
Whether it\u2019s a traditional videographer or a content creator, having your wedding documented in motion is something I hear couples rave about afterward.<\/p>\n
If photography helps you remember what your wedding looked like, video helps you remember what it felt<\/em> like.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s hearing your vows again and seeing your dad\u2019s reaction as he sees you in your dress. You\u2019ll watch your guests dance the night away and relive all of the little moments you didn\u2019t even realize were happening around you.<\/p>\n
Wedding Coordination<\/h3>\n
There\u2019s one other investment I think couples don\u2019t fully appreciate until they\u2019re in the middle of their wedding day, and that\u2019s coordination.<\/p>\n
Most people picture a day of wedding coordinator<\/strong> simply cueing the ceremony or making sure everyone walks down the aisle at the right time.<\/p>\nIn reality, good wedding coordination starts well before the wedding day.<\/p>\n
For my couples, coordination begins 60 days before the wedding<\/strong>. That gives us time for wedding timeline creation, vendor communication, logistics, and final details. It also ensures everyone involved knows exactly what needs to happen and when.<\/p>\nBy the time the wedding day arrives, there are dozens of moving parts happening behind the scenes that most couples never even see. Vendors are arriving, deliveries are being made, and timelines are shifting. Family members have questions, and someone must make sure everything continues moving smoothly.<\/p>\n
And this is where things can quietly fall apart if we\u2019re not careful.<\/p>\n
If that person isn\u2019t your coordinator, it\u2019s usually your mom, your sister, or your maid of honor.<\/p>\n
Those are the people who deserve to be fully present with you. They shouldn\u2019t be answering vendor phone calls or trying to figure out why the florist is running ten minutes behind.<\/p>\n
As a wedding coordinator in Alexandria, LA<\/strong>, one of my biggest goals is for my couples not<\/em> to know about every little thing I\u2019m handling behind the scenes. Whether the wedding is in Alexandria, Pineville, or somewhere else in Central Louisiana, the job is the same. I aim to keep the day moving so the couple and the people they love can actually experience it.<\/p>\nIronically, when coordination is done well, no one notices.<\/p>\n
Everything simply feels effortless.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s exactly how it should be.<\/p>\n
The Wedding Day Goes Faster Than You Think<\/h2>\n
One thing brides don\u2019t realize until after the wedding is just how quickly the day goes by.<\/p>\n
You spend months, sometimes more than a year, planning one of the biggest days of your life. Then suddenly it\u2019s over. Even a twelve-hour wedding day somehow feels like it passes in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s one of the reasons I\u2019m such a believer in doing a first look.<\/p>\n
If I could convince every engaged couple to do one thing, it would probably be that. The day moves so quickly. Those few quiet moments together before everything begins often become some of the most meaningful memories of the entire day.<\/p>\n
You get a chance to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply be together before the celebration begins.<\/p>\n
No matter what traditions you choose or what your budget looks like, I hope every couple remembers to do one thing:<\/p>\n
Be present.<\/strong><\/p>\nStep back during your reception and look around the room. Watch the people you love talking, laughing, and celebrating together. Hug your grandparents a little longer. Sneak away for a few quiet minutes with your new spouse.<\/p>\n
Soak it all in.<\/p>\n
Because when the music ends and the flowers are gone, those are the moments you\u2019ll remember most.<\/p>\n
Your Wedding Budget Should Reflect Your Priorities<\/h2>\n
At the end of the day, I\u2019ve never heard a guest leave a wedding talking about how much money the couple must have spent.<\/p>\n
They talk about how beautiful the ceremony was. How much fun they had. How happy the couple looked.<\/p>\n
They remember the feeling of the day far more than the price tag attached to it.<\/p>\n
So if you\u2019re newly engaged and trying to build your wedding budget, don\u2019t spend so much time worrying about whether your number looks like someone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Instead, decide what matters most to the two of you.<\/p>\n
Invest in the things that reflect your priorities, create meaningful memories, and allow you to truly enjoy your wedding day.<\/p>\n
Because wedding budgets aren\u2019t about the number.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re about priorities.<\/p>\n
And if one of your priorities is making sure you and your family get to actually enjoy the wedding you\u2019ve spent so much time planning, that\u2019s where a coordinator can make all the difference.<\/p>\n
